Quick answer
How long does SEO take to work?
Google says a change can take anything from a few hours to several months to show. It suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether something worked, and says not every change makes a difference.
The jargon
The words you'll come across, in plain English.
- SEO: search engine optimisation: making your website easy for Google to understand and show for the right searches.
- Crawling: Google's computers visiting your pages to read them.
- Indexing: Google storing your page so it can be shown in results.
- Ranking: where your page appears in Google's results.
- Search Console: Google's free tool showing how your site appears in Google.
The steps
What happens after a page goes live?
A page doesn't do anything just by existing. Google has to find it, read it, decide to keep it, understand it, and weigh it up against everyone else.
- Find: links, or a list of your pages, help Google find it
- Read: Google reads it when it gets round to it
- Store: Google decides whether to keep it
- Weigh up: Google decides which searches it's useful for
- Customers: real people still decide whether to click and ring
What affects it
What affects how long it takes?
- Whether your site is new or has been around a while
- Whether Google can actually read your important pages
- How often Google visits your site
- How big and how good the change is
- How much competition there is, and how many people search
- Your reviews, links and reputation
- Whether your service and area match the search
- Hacked pages, penalties or serious technical problems
Fixing the title on a page that's been up for years is a very different job from a brand new website in a busy area.
Examples
What's realistic for different jobs?
Do this
Existing page: a clearer title and better explanation might be picked up quite quickly, though the effect varies.
New site: Google may find it quickly, but building up to steady enquiries can take much longer.
Not this
The supplier says every site hits page one in 30 days, because that's how long their package lasts.
New websites
How long does a new website take to show up?
A new site can be found fast, especially if it's linked from your Google profile and you tell Google about it in Search Console. But it doesn't have the history, reviews and links your competitors have built up.
To start with, make sure Google can read it, your main pages are complete, your details are right and enquiries work. Don't churn out filler.
After a change
How long should I wait after a change?
Note what you changed and when. You can ask Google to look at a page again in Search Console, but Google says that doesn't make it instant, and asking over and over doesn't speed it up.
When to check
How often should I check?
- Straight away: the page works, it's linked, and it opens
- Once Google's found it: it's stored, with no obvious problems
- After a few weeks: look at searches and clicks in Search Console
- Over the next few months: compare visits, calls and enquiries
- Every time: change things based on what you see, not random ups and downs
Do this
Note where you are now, make sensible changes and look at the trend over an agreed time.
Not this
Rewrite pages every few days because one search dropped overnight.
Promises
Should I trust a guaranteed timescale?
Nobody controls Google, your competitors or how many customers search. Ask a supplier what they'll change, why it should help, what it depends on and how they'll measure it.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions.
How soon will Google find a new website?
It varies. Links, a list of your pages and Search Console all help, but there's no set time.
Does sending Google a list of my pages make them rank?
No. It helps Google find them. It doesn't make them show up higher.
Why did I drop overnight?
Results move all the time, with Google's changes, competitors, location and what people search.
Should I just wait?
Fix known problems and carry on, but don't change things every day before you can see a trend.
When should I worry?
If pages disappear, Google reports errors, visits drop sharply, or you can't find yourself by your own name. Normal ups and downs aren't a crisis.
Can SEO guarantee enquiries by a date?
No. Seasons, competition, demand, price, trust and how easy you are to contact all play a part.
