Quick answer

How much does a website for a tradesperson cost?

A one page site you build yourself, a professionally built website and a custom booking system are different things. Before you decide one quote is cheaper, compare the pages, the writing, the design, the testing, who owns it, the support and what you keep paying.

At Sprint Start, the £0 Build has no build fee for accepted applications, with Sprint Start Managed at £49 a month or £480 a year for the first 12 months. Paid builds start from £750. We confirm the full price in writing before you pay anything.

The jargon

The words you'll come across, in plain English.

  • Domain: your website address, like smithplumbing.co.uk. You pay to keep it each year.
  • Hosting: where your website is kept so people can visit it. Usually a monthly or yearly cost.
  • Template: a ready made design a website is built from.
  • Ownership: who legally controls the website, the domain and the accounts behind them.
  • SEO: search engine optimisation, making your site easy for Google to understand and show.
  • Support: help with changes, fixes and updates after the site is live.

What changes the price?

What changes the price of a website?

  • How many pages, and what kind
  • Who writes the words
  • Design and logo work
  • Forms, calculators or links to other systems
  • Getting photos ready
  • Testing on phones and different browsers
  • Making it easy to use and easy for Google to read
  • Changes, training and handover
  • Hosting, updates and support

Compare quotes

How do I compare website quotes?

Compare the whole thing

You check the pages, what's in and out, who owns it, when you pay, what you keep paying, and what happens after it goes live.

Pick the lowest number

You take the cheapest, then find the words, phone fixes, forms, support and moving it later all cost extra.

  • What do I get? Which pages, features, and who writes what
  • Who owns it? The domain, the accounts, and the website once paid for
  • What do I keep paying? Hosting, email, domain, updates and support
  • What if I want changes? How many are included, and the price for more

Ongoing costs

What do I keep paying after it's built?

Usually: your domain renewal, business email, hosting, and any updates or support you've agreed. Adverts and ongoing SEO are extra, unless the quote clearly includes them.

Sprint Start Managed is £49 a month or £480 a year. Or, once your website is yours, you can look after the hosting yourself and pay the hosting company directly.

Why prices differ

Why are some websites so much cheaper?

Templates and good systems save time, and that's fine. The problem is when it's cheap because important work is missing, or nobody's clear who's responsible.

  • Nothing in writing about what you get
  • No clear way to own it or take it elsewhere
  • Not tested on phones
  • No mention of what you keep paying
  • Unlimited promises with no limits on support
  • Guaranteed rankings or enquiries

Set a budget

How do I set a website budget?

Work out what customers need to see and do. For most trades that's: your services, where you cover, proof you're good, and an easy way to call or ask for a quote.

Only spend more when a page or feature solves a real problem for you or your customers.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

Why are some websites £200 and others £5,000?

They include very different amounts of planning, writing, design, features, testing, support and ownership. Compare what you actually get.

Do I have to pay it all up front?

Not always. It depends on the company. We confirm how you'll pay and the full first year cost before we start.

Is hosting included forever?

Never assume so. Check the ongoing price, how it renews and how to cancel.

Will a more expensive website rank higher?

Not because of the price. Google ranks pages on things like how useful and relevant they are, and nobody can guarantee a top spot.

Can I add pages later?

Usually, yes. Ask how extra work is priced.

What should a quote include?

The pages, features, who writes what, how many changes, who owns it, when you pay, ongoing costs, what isn't included, and how you sign it off.
